“There is no universal freedom without gender equality and bodily autonomy.”

A Blueprint Vision Statement: Principles to Reimagine and Strengthen Reproductive Freedom is a newly released document that highlights 10 principles for policymakers to protect and advance sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice (SRHRJ) in the United States and around the world.

The Blueprint for Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Justice

The Blueprint for Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Justice is a proactive policy agenda to advance sexual and reproductive health in the United States and around the world. The endorsing organizations are committed to a future where those in power will support, not restrict, our individual sexual and reproductive health and rights, a time when a fully supportive Congress and Administration will work together to enact policies the Blueprint lays out. This Blueprint is our agenda for that future.

The last two years have seen increasingly hostile attacks on reproductive autonomy and rights, creating a palpable urgency for action that demands a proactive and transformative agenda. Decades after the U.S. Supreme Court established the fundamental rights to contraception and abortion, these critical rights are at stake and being openly challenged. In many parts of the United States and around the world, people have only a theoretical right to sexual and reproductive autonomy. Restrictive laws and policies have made it virtually impossible to access the information, services, and providers people need to care for their health and wellbeing.

That’s why a coalition of more than 90 organizations came together to develop a visionary policy agenda that boldly proclaims that for people to be free and equal, they must be able to exercise complete autonomy over their bodies. The Blueprint lays out a broad vision for the future that includes forward thinking ideas to transform sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice policy domestically and globally, as well as basic and fundamental measures to correct the backtracking that has taken place in recent years. The Blueprint is not a complete overview of every policy that will be necessary to achieve sexual and reproductive health equity in the United States and globally. It is a starting point that is intended to provide the scaffolding from which additional policies can be developed.

The Blueprint is centered on five key principles:

The Appointments Project

It is also important that highly qualified and diverse issue experts are appointed to positions across the Administration. The Appointments Project seeks interested individuals, as well as recommendations of interested individuals, for key positions at all levels of the Administration.

The Blueprint recognizes that sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice intersect with numerous other issues, from gender and racial equity to economic justice to the right to community safety to immigrants’ rights to LGBTQ+ liberation. Indeed, individuals most impacted by public policy surrounding sexual and reproductive health and rights are those who have fewer resources and means to navigate systemic barriers. That’s why the Blueprint is grounded in the belief that all individuals – no matter who they are, how much money they have, or where they are from – have the right to sexual and reproductive autonomy.

Guided by these five key principles, the Blueprint proposes the following critical policy goals:

  • Coverage of and access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care services and qualified providers at no or low cost and without exception for all people, including immigrants, incarcerated individuals, and young people under the age of 18.
  • Unobstructed access to abortion care, including surgical abortion, medication abortion, and self-managed abortion.
  • Comprehensive pregnancy and maternal health care strategies that prioritize the health care needs of pregnant and birthing individuals.
  • Strong non-discrimination protections for patients, including protections that ensure providers’ religious or personal beliefs do not dictate patient care.
  • Health care system transformation that prioritizes sexual and reproductive health care, including research and development in the field of reproductive health and scientific integrity and transparency in sexual and reproductive health care.
  • Foreign policy that prioritizes sexual and reproductive health and rights.
  • Robust response to the global HIV/AIDS crisis.
  • Economic opportunity, freedom from violence, and healthy and safe environments for all individuals, families, and communities.
  • Selection and confirmation of administrative and judicial nominees who will advance sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice.

This Blueprint represents the future we want to live in where each individual has sexual and reproductive autonomy over their own body. It provides a playbook on how to get there. And it is drafted with the expectation that it will be implemented as soon as we have a supportive Congress and Administration. That future is coming, and we are ready.
